The Evolution of the Instagram Logo

The Original Logo (2010)

The original Instagram logo was designed by one of its founders, Kevin Systrom, in 2010. The logo drew its inspiration from Polaroid cameras, which could capture and print images within moments. This reflected the idea behind Instagram: a simple and fast way to share photos with friends.

The logo featured a brown camera icon with a rainbow stripe on top. It also had a lens in the center that resembled an eye. The word "Instagram" was written in a cursive font below the icon.

<img The First Redesign (2010)

The first redesign of the Instagram logo was done by Cole Rise, a photographer and graphic designer, in 2010. He was hired by Systrom to improve the original logo and make it more appealing and professional.

The redesigned logo retained the camera icon and the rainbow stripe, but made some changes to the details and colors. The icon was more realistic and detailed, with a flash, a shutter button, and a viewfinder. The rainbow stripe was more subtle and gradient. The word "Instagram" was changed to a sleeker and modern font.

The Second Redesign (2016)

The second and current redesign of the Instagram logo was done by Ian Spalter, the head of design at Instagram, and his team, in 2016. They wanted to create a logo that reflected the evolution of the platform, which had grown from a photo-sharing app to a diverse and creative community.

The redesigned logo simplified the camera icon and replaced the rainbow stripe with a gradient background. The icon was more abstract and minimalistic, with only three elements: a square, a circle, and a dot. The background was more colorful and vibrant, with shades of purple, pink, orange, and yellow. The word "Instagram" was removed from the logo.

The Instagram Logo Guidelines

When you use the Instagram logo for your branding needs, you need to follow the official guidelines provided by Instagram. These guidelines are meant to protect the integrity and identity of the Instagram brand, as well as to ensure consistency and clarity for your audience.

The main points of the guidelines are:

  • Use the official logo pack downloaded from the Brand Resource Center site. Do not create your own version of the logo or modify it in any way.

  • Use the multicolor version of the logo on white or light-colored backgrounds. Use the monochrome version of the logo on dark-colored backgrounds or when printing in black and white.

  • Respect the minimum clear space around the logo, which is equal to half of the icon's width. Do not place any other elements within this space.

  • Respect the minimum size of the logo, which is 29 pixels on screen or 0.25 inches in print. Do not make the logo smaller than this size.

  • Do not use the word "Instagram" or any other words or symbols next to or below the logo. If you need to refer to Instagram in text, use a capital "I".

  • Do not use the logo in a way that implies endorsement, partnership, or sponsorship by Instagram. Do not use the logo in a way that is misleading, offensive, or harmful to Instagram or its users.

To help you understand these guidelines better, here is a table that compares some examples of dos and don'ts when using the logo:

How to Download the Instagram Logo

Now that you know the guidelines for using the Instagram logo, you might be wondering how to download it in the first place. Well, it's very easy and straightforward. Just follow these steps:

  • Go to the Brand Resource Center site, which is the official source for all Instagram logos and icons.

  • Scroll down to the section that says "Download Instagram logos here". You will see two options: multicolor and monochrome.

How to Use the Instagram Logo for Branding

Using the Instagram logo for branding is a great way to show your audience that you are active and creative on the platform. It can also help you increase your followers, customers, or fans, as well as your engagement and reach.

However, using the logo alone is not enough. You also need to consider how to balance it with your own brand identity and avoid confusion or dilution. Here are some tips on how to use the logo effectively for branding:

  • Use the logo sparingly and strategically. Don't overuse it or place it everywhere. Choose the places where it makes sense and adds value, such as your website header, footer, or sidebar, your social media bio or cover photo, your business card or flyer, or your product packaging or label.

  • Use the logo consistently and coherently. Don't mix and match different versions or colors of the logo. Stick to one style and follow the guidelines. Make sure the logo is clear and visible, not distorted or obscured.

  • Use the logo to promote your presence on Instagram and encourage your audience to engage with you. Don't just display the logo without any context or call to action. Include your Instagram handle or a hashtag next to or below the logo, and invite your audience to follow you, like your posts, comment on your stories, or tag you in their photos.

Use the logo in different media platforms and formats, but adapt it accordingly. Don't use the same logo file for every platform or format. Consider the
